Some people are born leaders in the sense that they instinctively know how to rally others to their side. Others are born into leadership positions and fail miserably because they aren’t guided by principles that would make them effective. (consider the disappearance of hereditary monarchies as a form of government, if you will. )the rest of us have to rely on a combination of art and science when it comes to earning our position as leaders and developing our leadership skills. Fortunately, there’s a large body of work in the fields of sociology and psychology that can help us compensate for whatever instincts we lack.
In this webinar, mike jordan (global head of people development, hp) unpacks the secret behind hp's success: a relentless focus on growth mindset & leadership principles that foster a culture of innovation. Blog, your brain at work .
As discussed in jeff olson’s the slight edge, small increments of time every day add up to major progress—he notes reading only ten pages on leadership per day means that in one year, you’ll have read 3,650 pages or the equivalent of between 12 and 24 dozen books on the topic of leadership and leadership principles. I’ve got this image posted near the computer i work on for my full-time job in leadership, and i also have it posted by the computer i use for my freelance writing. It’s a daily reminder that small actions build upon each other, and days build upon days.
Being an amazing leader doesn’t just happen. It takes a lot of work and effort for people to develop their leadership skills. Leadership is often discussed in-depth in seminars and books, and even in degree programs. There are entire degrees dedicated to helping students become better leaders. These programs are essential as they help future leaders learn specific skills they need to thrive in a business setting, as well as communication and management techniques that will help them work effectively in leading a team. Good leaders know that effective leadership doesn’t come easily. They work to cultivate leadership behaviors that will help them be effective and inspiring to their team.
What makes a leader effective? is it knowing your style? is it having certain skills? is it just using your position well? the key to being an effective leader is to follow good principles of leadership. Knowing your leadership style or having a lot of skills by itself won’t make you an effective leader – but following good principles of leadership will. Principles are values (or rules) that one uses to guide their actions, thinking, and decision-making. In some cases, they could be considered fundamental truths that are a foundation for choices, actions, and growth. In leadership, there are certain principles that effective leaders follow.
Leadership, regardless of the setting, can often be intangible. But successful leaders share common traits. At csun, with our unyielding commitment to student success, the following leadership principles are absolutely essential. Every csun leader should strive to model these attributes day in, day out. These qualities, which are all important and listed in no particular order or ranking, should not feel overly aspirational or even inspirational. Rather, these characteristics should feel familiar and routine. Living these principles creates the environment where employees and students achieve their goals and ultimately success.
While interviewing the legendary jack nicklaus, a reporter once remarked, “jack, you have had a spectacular career. Your name is synonymous with the game of golf. You really know your way around the course. What is your secret?” nicklaus replied, “the holes are numbered!” if only leadership were so easy. (given the sad state of my game, i’m the last person who should use “easy” and “golf” in the same sentence!) of course, there are no handily numbered steps that we can follow in developing our leadership. But after decades of studying leadership — of writing and speaking about it, trying to practise it, and coaching thousands of managers in it — i am convinced that there are timeless leadership principles which we can all use to be more effective in our personal and professional lives.
Every company has a promotion process. For most of the companies, these promotions heavily depend on the manager though. There are personal relationships involved and affecting the overall situation in the company and who is getting promoted. Leadership principles formalize this process by giving the employee and their boss a common base on what to get rated on. In klarna this process is implemented in a quite good way. Most bigger companies like klarna have a promotion cycle wherein specific time frames promotions are held. At klarna this process is followed twice per year and begins with writing a self-review on your own but also gathering feedback by other people.
